The video above might freak you out a little. If you stare at the point in the center, it feels like grotesque monsters are flashing by on the edges. Yet those faces haven’t been altered in any way. They’ve only been lined up by their eye-level.

Being able to quickly read facial communication (emotion, expression, attention, etc.) is deeply embedded in primate brains.  The way that humans process faces is a direct result of how the face is put together, with exact arrangements and proportions. But when we are forced to view them quickly, and with our visual perception altered just a tiny bit, it can throw off the whole process. That’s why you see the caricatures that you do.

PS - I don’t particularly like the title of this video, because it completely overlooks the science going on, but hey, that’s YouTube!

About 120 years ago, Thomas Edison recorded a lady singing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” into an early recording device. It worked by cutting grooves in a metal cylinder, much like an LP wrapped around a beer can. The intended use? None other than an early talking doll. Yep. The man who gave us the modern lightbulb and motion pictures was going for his millions in the doll industry.
Scientists found the badly damaged cylinder and reconstructed the recording using a 3D microscope.
You can hear it for yourself here.

Someone figured out how to make this even better. This person gets a cookie and a high-five.

So I’m not the only person who thought “oh, the sun’s whistling? I thought it was getting ready to really finish the thermometer” right?

Looks like it’s gonna be hot this weekend.

On the subject of cool “liquids” I thought I’d post about that corner stone of my child hood: The non Newtonian fluid. It always irked me how the adults in my life liked to give it stupid, childish names but hey.

For those of you who don’t know, a Non Newtonian fluid is any liquid that breaks from the stereotypical ideals set forward for fluid dynamics by, you guessed it, Newton. In this example the substance is liquid until a force is applied by the vibrations of the speaker cone causing it to become solid.

The other cool thing is you can make this stuff at home, just get corn starch and add some water.

Saw this, thought it was cute, thought I’d share a fact about this thing so that it fits in with the rest of my blog. For the majority of the year (if this is an area not permanently covered in snow) this wee mustelid is in fact brown in color and it’s fur only changes to white for the winter months.
